Out of Exile: The Photography of Fred Stein

Award-winning “Best Feature Documentary” at the Prague International Film Festival, Out of Exile - the Photography of Fred Stein, is the tale of a man caught up in one of history’s darkest moments; a man of conviction and courage, whose answer is to create an art that transcends bigotry.

The vibrant world of 1930s Paris; the heart-stopping suspense of fleeing across the French countryside; the crowds of refugees in Marseilles; the bustle of 1940s New York…these are some of the places that Out of Exile takes us as we follow Fred Stein’s perilous escape from the Nazis. And we are shown a cascade of brilliant photographs, full of breathless excitement, as Fred Stein discovers photography.

Throughout these experiences run the emotions: Fred Stein’s unfailing optimism in the face of hardship; his remarkable ability to connect to another person in his photographs; the dedication of his son, who, after Fred Stein’s name is forgotten, fights to bring his father’s work to the attention of the public; the power of art.

The photographs are beautiful and uplifting; the life is inspiring; together they form a powerful statement of the human spirit.
